Burning the lanterns on Halloween Day is a popular tradition. Behind it is the Irish folktale of the stingy Jack and the Devil. Ireland-born stingy drunk Jack brought his devil friend to drink in their house, but he did not want to spend his own money. He persuaded his friend to give the pumpkin in exchange of liquor. He later retracted his point. Then his friend made a scary Lanterns of pumpkin and hung it on the tree outside the house, on which he carved his mouth and put some burning coal in it. Since then, the practice of jack-o-lanterns began on this day as a lesson for other people. It is a symbol of their ancestors' spirits showing the way and protecting them from evil spirits.
